Could you do it?
U8TV brings reality TV to our own backyard
By Tara Nolan
They're young, they're hip, and they're living right here in Toronto. It certainly didn't take long for the newest, most "hyped" trend in television to take root in our city: Reality TV. Or, in this case U8TV. The Alliance Atlantis family is bringing this program to you. The show, which places eight "twentysomethings" in a fully furnished and wired loft for one full year, airs both on the Life Network and online at www.U8TV.com.
The point? Taking its cue from the other shows that endeavour to be unique from the rest, this one has "lofters" living together while learning how to host, produce, and edit shows on subjects such as entertainment, love, news, and life in general. Applicants had to undergo grueling auditions in September before four men and four women were finally chosen. The series debut was January 15. The incentive? The group receive free rent and a $30 000 annual salary. But is it worth it? Living in Toronto rent-free is a dream come true. However can the vixen, the supermodel, the heartthrob, the conscience, the artiste, the rebel, the dude, and the hipster get along? Viewers will soon find out if those who were "seeking a life less ordinary" can deal with cameras following their every move twenty-four hours a day.
Will anyone watch? This show could go two ways: wildly and disturbingly successful like its predecessor Survivor, or it could flop like Big Brother. Only time will tell whether such headlines as "Shower Hour" or "Licking the Lolly" will tantalize viewers and keep them coming back for more. Producers definitely anticipate success, as the website already has a link to sign up possible contestants for round two! U8TV can be seen weeknights at 9:30 on the Life Network
