Music review:
Viewerstardom – Pin-up

By Devin Watkins

ViewerStardom's music has been described as an "explosive mixture of electronic pop punk" that combines energetic big beats with quirky synths, melodramatic riot worthy guitar riffs and powerful vocals that top off the tech angst sound that ViewerStardom calls their own. ViewerStardom formed in the suburbs of Toronto, after numerous (& pointless) failed punk/pop bands, they grew tired of playing music that had been written a thousand times before, so they decided to pursue a different sound. That sound evolved into the ViewerStardom you hear today. ViewerStardom's live sonic assault often turns out a variety of reactions from the audience. From joy to anger to confusion, regardless of the reaction, the crowd never forgets the beating they had to endure.

Although only three tracks in length, the demo album for ViewerStardom captures the raw intensity and power of their live performances across Toronto. This up-and-coming local crew just nailed their recent gig at the Reverb as a vast success with negotiations in progress for future appearances. On the critical side, their demo clearly demonstrates their talent and potential, but there are some small areas that could use improvement. Pin-Up needs to balance out the vocals. They get drowned out in the mix of other instruments, particularly the scratches, which dominate the rest. Aside from the vocal distortion and slightly softening the scratches, the rest of the song is a well composed mosaic of heavy and haunting elements. Good mixing and variety of sounds. A new studio version will be on the forthcoming Demolition Bitch EP. "Ghettotronic" demonstrates their grasp of the electronic elements in this instrumental piece that reminds me of a darker Aphex Twin. Enemy, described as being similar to almost getting into a fight all the time, is by far the best of the album with a smooth blend of good vocals and heavy industrial influences.

The only criticisms of the album I have are of a minor nature due to their inexperience in the studio. Once they work out the filtering problems they will have a professional and top-quality album in their hands. Other than that this group shows a remarkable grasp of composition for a three track demo. For a band just getting on its feet publicly they show a depth of vision and dedication to their craft that should see them clear to their own viewer stardom.
